Competition at North Cronulla

Consistent with Surf Lifesaving NSW’s mission of being the ‘premier aquatic organisation in New South Wales’, the three main goals of North Cronulla and all surf lifesaving clubs throughout NSW focuses on Lifesaving, Education & Development.  However, right alongside these fundamental and crucial elements of the Surf Lifesaving movement, sits the competition side of surf lifesaving.

North Cronulla has a very proud and strong tradition in surf lifesaving competition. The club competes regularly at Branch, State and National surf carnivals, and has an exceptional record at State, National and World Championship competitions. In fact in both 1981 and 1995 North Cronulla won the title of World Surf Life Saving Champions. Added to these fine achievements have been numerous individual competitors and teams chosen to represent various teams from branch level right through to National representation.

The club has produced a long list of champions - some of which include Steve Warren, Bob Johnson, Simon Cotter, Damien Bulian, Kate Krywulycz, and a number of national title winning boat crews, R&R and march past teams.  A walk through the North Cronulla Harold Judd clubroom is like a walk down Australian championships in years gone by, with the walls adorned with photos and memorabilia of former North Cronulla members crowned Australian surf lifesaving champions. It is every club member's dream to get their picture on the Judd Room ‘Wall of Fame’.

The tradition of surf life saving and competition continues at North Cronulla, with approximately 500 senior and 250 junior members. In 75 years, North Cronulla members have conducted more than 11,000 rescues, and at last year’s Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships, North Cronulla sent a team of more than 120 competitors- all gunning for national title glory!

North Cronulla SLSC is also the host of the AAA rated Christmas Surf Carnival each year, in which competitors from around the state converge on North Cronulla beach in all competition events, with the most competitive and prized victories coming in the Open Ironman, Ironwoman and surfboat finals.

Each year North Cronulla SLSC also competes at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships, where members compete against some 7,000 competitors from clubs across the country, making it the second largest sporting event in terms of number of participants in the world (second only to the Olympic Games).

With a philosophy of ‘One Cap, One Club’, North Cronulla SLSC places a strong emphasis on encouraging competitors from both junior and senior sections to learn, develop and continuously improve their competitive skills and abilities across a number of different competition sections including:

New members and competitors are always welcome, and a great way to work out which surf lifesaving discipline you are best suited to, is to come down the beach for our Sunday morning activities, which include swim and board races (all handicapped), as well as various other section training sessions, including the ‘beachies’ and ‘boaties’ training sessions.

 Training Programs

Both the Nippers and senior club run regular training sessions and squads that ensure the Northies team perform at their optimum levels throughout the season, with the ultimate goal of peaking for the State & National Titles each March/April.
